Luckily, there are ways to eliminate cooking odors naturally. Read on to find out what you can do to keep your dinner from living on in your indoor air. 1. Ventilation When you're cooking, open the windows and place a fan facing out to draw smoke and odors outside. If you have a ceiling fan, set it to draw smoke up and away from you, and toward the window. Also, if you have cook top vents, make sure to use it to prevent fumes and odors from spreading beyond the cooking area. 2. Simmer Potpourri Once you're finished cooking, place a small pot of water on the stove and add fragrant spices...nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves work well. Add some lemon or lime peels, and bring the water to a simmer. Let it simmer for an hour or so. You can also boil sliced fresh lemons and limes on the stove. 3. Vinegar Pour vinegar into a small bowl, and leave it sitting beside the stove for several hours or overnight. If you're making something especially pungent, leave several bowls out while you're cooking. This is especially good at eliminating those lingering fish and seafood odors. 4. Get Brewing After dinner, make some coffee. Grinding coffee beans or brewing coffee will cover the smell of your dinner. Try using different flavors, like French Vanilla or Hazelnut, to add a nice aroma. 5. Baking Soda To get rid of food smells in your carpets or rugs, sprinkle baking soda on and leave it to sit overnight. In the morning, vacuum it up. The baking soda will absorb the odors and leave your floors smelling fresh. Also, put about a tablespoon down your sink drain and add some vinegar...it will foam up and freshen your drain. 6. Scrub Some food smells are from grease build-up on walls, ceilings and cupboards. Keep these areas clean, and make sure to check those tricky areas, like behind the stove, for build-up. Use a solution of white vinegar, lemon juice and water to cut through the grease, or baking soda for scouring. 7. Purify In addition to the above methods, you may use an air purifier with a good filter to absorb odors and bacteria floating around. This will also help eliminate other particles in the air, like dust and allergens. If you follow these tips, you're well on your way to a cooking odor-free home!
