Herbs are alternative treatments to harsh medications and topical creams. Hemorrhoids are basically varicose veins in the anal and rectal regions, caused primarily by straining during bowel movements. Hemorrhoids are associated with frequent constipation, and also with frequent bouts of diarrhea. Witch hazel is well-known as an topical herbal remedy. Many stores sell pads that are soaked in witch hazel, and then applied topically over the anus. Witch hazel, which is a healing and astringent tree, whose bark is used often in medicine, nourishes the failing blood vessels, and provides cooling, soothing relief. One solution is to make a suppository from comfrey root and white oak bark. The herbs are mixed in equal parts, and then cocoa butter is added, until suppositories the size of the little finger are formed. The mixture is refrigerated overnight, and then one suppository is inserted into the rectum nightly, before bed. As the cocoa butter melts, the herbs disinfect and purify swollen tissues, breaking up clots and returning the tissues to their normal size. Aloe vera is also effective for internal or external hemorrhoid treatment. Patients should either break the leaf of the aloe vera plant, and apply the extract directly to the anus, or use an organic aloe vera gel. If using the plant, then the plant should be washed with clean water, to remove dirt and bacteria. Then, the leaf should be broken, and the pieces should be inserted into the anus. Bilberry tablets may decrease the symptoms of hemorrhoids. The correct dosage is usually 240-480 milligrams per day, and treatment should not last longer than three weeks. Bilberry decreases the permeability of the capillaries, and may increase the collagen thickness in the capillaries. A combination of butcher's broom and Vitamin C may tone and shrink enlarged veins. Herbalists recommend 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin C, taken three times per day, along with 150 milligrams of butcher's broom, taken once daily. A topical ointment consisting of St. John's wort will relieve pain, and will encourage better recovery for ruptured veins. For hemorrhoid prevention, herbalists recommend a mixture of apple cider vinegar, honey, and cayenne pepper. Herbalists usually mix one cup of apple cider vinegar, and one cup of honey, with two to four cups of hot distilled water. To the mixture, herbalists then add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. The mixture is then kept in the refrigerator until consumed, and does not need to be reheated to be effective. When moving the bowels, patients should make sure that they do not strain the anal sphincter. The veins in the anal area may be weakened by pregnancy, or by jobs that involve extended periods of sitting or standing. Older people tend to suffer more from the condition, because the muscles which move waste through the body lose their tone, as people age. Dietary interventions may be the best natural home remedies for hemorrhoids. Herbalists recommend taking one teaspoon of ground flaxseed or psyllium inside one eight-ounce glass of water. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes may also prevent the development or the worsening of the condition. There are plenty of home remedies for hemorrhoids to get rid of them.
