You have decided you want to make one wall in your room the feature wall - be it the wall behind your bed, the fireplace wall in your living room, the stairwell wall in your hall, the bare wall in your kitchen or perhaps it's the dining room area in an open plan apartment or house. But beyond wallpapering the wall in a single wallpaper, are there any other ways you can make this wall your feature wall with wallpaper? Of course there is, follow our tips for some new ideas for creating a feature wall.
    • As stated above, wallpaper the entire wall in a single wallpaper design, single walls tend to take between 2 and 3 rolls of wallpaper and can create interest, impact and warmth without overwhelming the room and too much expense.
    • Wallpaper the alcoves either side of your fireplace. You could either wallpaper the full width of the alcove or use a wallpaper panel or a single strip of wallpaper in each. By placing beading as a frame around the strip of wallpaper will make it look as though this was intentional and not intended to be a cheap way around your decorating! Alternatively you could paint the feature wall in the background colour of the wallpaper and then centralise the 2 strips of wallpaper in the alcoves - this creates vivid impact at a fraction of the cost of wallpapering the whole wall.
    • Hang the wallpaper horizontally leaving a block of a vivid paint colour between each strip of wallpaper.
    • Hang one strip of vivid striped wallpaper horizontally along the same level as the main furniture e.g the top of the sofa or along the top of the headboard.
    • Don't forget the bathroom - it is an ideal room for wallpapering one wall as there is usually one wall that is quite bare and opposite the shower area. Just remember to varnish over the wallpaper if it is in danger of being splashed by water.
    • Let wallpaper be your headboard. Wallpaper behind your bed from the top of the bed to the ceiling to create a headboard with impact and interest.
  • Use wall panels such as the Scandinavian panel pieces to create a specific area in an open plan living arrangement. Place 2 or 3 wall panels in the dining area or in a relaxed reading area so it creates a little separate zone that is marked by the wall covering.
However, don't let the feature wall work in isolation in the room. If you have placed a vivid or bold wallpaper on a single wall, remember to continue that colour or style or pattern around the room in lamps, cushions, rugs and vases so the whole room has unity and continuity.
