How Sport Has Influenced Fashion

Sport and fashion enjoy a healthy relationship and this is set to be even more popular with the 2012 Olympics. You may not associate fitness or working out with haute couture but the two work well together to produce clothes which can be worn by fitness fanatics and couch potatoes alike. Workout inspired clothing such as tracksuits, sweatshirts and trainers are chosen for comfort, style and in some cases, image even though their wearer never sets foot in a gym. The development of technical fabrics such as wicking materials have led to clothing which suits the needs of the athlete as well as the occasional exerciser. Sports brands You are probably familiar with famous sports brands such as Nike, Adidas and Puma. These have been worn by athletes across the decades but have now been appropriated by fashion designers. These designers enter into contracts with these brands in order to create a new look as well as tapping into new audiences. Cycling, athletics, football, rugby etc have all influenced fashion trends or filtered down into the mainstream. Men will particularly relate to this, for example wearing a football shirt as a way of showing loyalty to their favourite team. Sports fashion for men The football shirt is a popular item of clothing for men especially if it has the name of their favourite footballer on the back. This is often teamed with jeans and the obligatory scarf to complete the outfit. But other popular choices of sports clothing include rugby shirts, branded running tops, tracksuit bottoms, baseball caps and baseball boots. Sports fashion for women It has been the case that women are less keen or don't have the time to participate in sport to the same extent as men. Many girls give up sport when they leave school and are reluctant to return to it citing reasons such as unflattering clothing or a lack of women specific clothing. Many women feel that they have to wear extra small sizes of male sports clothing which does not fit properly and is unappealing. Fortunately designers have taken this on board and have brought out collections which are aimed at the female exerciser. These include hoodies, jogging pants, t-shirts and jackets in soft fabrics and colours such as ice blue and mint green. But there are also workout clothes in bold eye-catching colours such as bright pink and black which suits the confident and assertive woman. These are ideal for that early morning spinning class, lunchtime Pilates or a tough Boxercise session in the evening. It was the case that sports clothing was only worn by athletes and sportspeople but this has changed to reflect the growing interest in sport and fitness as a whole. There has been a cross over between the two which has resulted in sports inspired fashion for men, women and children.
