Useful Tips To Make Doing Your Laundry Faster, Cheaper & Easier
Posted 4 years ago
So you hate doing the laundry! Don’t worry, you’re not alone, you’re just a member of a not very exclusive club. There is however a number of things you can do to make doing your laundry faster, cheaper and easier!
The first trick is in the laundry hamper
If you are like most people, you have one laundry hamper, which, when you come to wash day, always seems to be jammed full of a mountain of dirty clothes.
How long does it take you to sort them all out?
There’s an easy solution to save you time here; simply buy a second hamper and instruct everyone in your household to place their dirty whites in one hamper, and their colored clothes in the other. Then, come wash day, you wash is already sorted for you.
At the end of your wash, how long does it take you to sort all the socks into pairs? How often do you end up with one odd sock? This is another area where you can save time and avoid frustration.
Buy yourself a bunch of sock clips, then put them in a bag and hang the bag on the side of the hamper. Instruct everyone in your household to clip each pair of dirty socks together before throwing them in the hamper. They will remain together throughout the washing and drying cycle, then, when it comes to putting them away, why not leave them clipped together when you put them in a drawer or closet?
Doing the wash
Although, if you follow our ideas, your wash is presorted, you still need to pay attention when it comes to small or delicate garments.
We suggest you sort these items from the rest of your wash and place them in a zippered mesh bag.
It’s worth pointing out at this time that a zippered mesh bag is a much better choice than a pull string mesh bag; we prefer the zipper wash bag for two reasons, firstly the pull string wash bags often come open during the wash and secondly, the pull strings occasionally become entangled with the rest of your wash.
It’s also worth mentioning that even if you are washing delicate garments in a mesh bag, you should still turn them inside out, especially if they have sequins or the like.
It’s best to use cold water when washing colored garments
By washing your coloreds in cold water, you are reducing the risk of the colors running and fading, plus, it will save you money on your energy bill as you do not have to pay for the energy to heat the water.
Put your laundry detergent in before your clothes
When using a top loader, most people pour the laundry detergent in on top of their clothes. This can lead to stain marks on your clothing.
The best way to avoid the risk of staining is to let the water run first, then add your laundry detergent, then let the water run a little more to dilute the detergent before putting your clothes in.
Tip:– Did you know you can use white vinegar as a substitute for fabric softener? Just use the same amount as you would if you were using an expensive fabric softener. You won’t even notice the difference, apart from in your pocket book!
Use dryer sheets in your tumble dryer to prevent static
Have you ever noticed that when you take your clothes out of the dryer you occasionally get a small static shock? If you use dryer sheets the static will be eliminated and the dryer sheets will also leave your clean washing with a pleasant odor.
Tip:– You can cut the dryer sheets in half and still get the same static free result. This will obviously make your box of dryer sheets last twice as long and also save you some more money.
Tip:– When drying thick bulky items in your tumble dryer, such as a blanket or denim, put a large dry towel in with them. This simple tip will cut the drying time dramatically and save you even more money on your energy bill.
